information for planning your trip
to the workshop
On this page you can find some information which could be useful to plan
your travel to the workshop
'Modeling pronunciation variation for automatic speech recognition'.
Before planning your trip, it is useful to know where Kerkrade is
situated. You can see it on
this map of the south of the province Limburg.
You now know that Kerkrade is close to Heerlen and Maastricht. Then look
at the following
map of the Netherlands. This is a big map, so it can take some time
to load it.
Kerkrade is not on the map, but you can find Heerlen and Maastricht in the
south-east part of the Netherlands.
As you can see Kerkrade is near the borders of Germany and Belgium.
Therefore, to reach Kerkrade you can fly to one of the following three
large international airports:
Amsterdam Airport: Schiphol
Brussels airport: Zaventem
Frankfurt airport: Frankfurt Main
You can also fly to two smaller airports, viz. those of
Düsseldorf (in Germany)
and
Beek near Maastricht (= Maastricht Aachen Airport = Beek Airport).
[Information on the linked site is in Dutch !]
But it is probably better to fly to one of the 3 larger airports mentioned
above, and take the train there (ask your travel agent).
Note that at Maastricht Aachen Airport there is no train station.
From this airport you can take a bus (one bus is called interliner) or
taxi to Maastricht. Of course you can also take a taxi directly to Rolduc.
With airplanes you never know exactly when they will arrive. Therefore, it is
(almost) impossible to plan a connecting train trip. However, you probably
do want to know what the train connection is between the airports and
Kerkrade. You can look it up at:
national (Dutch) planner for Amsterdam and Brussels airport
(same in Dutch)
international planner for Frankfurt airport
(same in Dutch)
if you are a train buff
Some tips in order to make it easier for you to look up things. Use the
following terms:
Kerkrade centrum
'Schiphol' or 'Schiphol world' for Amsterdam airport
Brussel noord (Brussels airport has a train station, and from there
you arrive at 'Brussel noord'.)
Frankfurt(M)Flugh.
If you come by public transport (e.g. from one of the airports) take a
train to Heerlen or 'Kerkrade centrum'.
At the train station of Heerlen you can take a so-called train taxi to
Rolduc. It will cost about NLG 8 for each person. Yes, in train taxis you
pay for each person. Buy a ticket in the train station at the same counter
where you can also buy the train tickets. Just ask the taxi driver to take
you to the main entrance of Rolduc.
At the train station 'Kerkrade centrum' there are also taxis (but no train
taxis). For these 'regular' taxis you will pay about NLG 20 for the whole
trip. The maximum number of passengers is 4 (if you can fit your lugage in
the trunk). Walking from the train station 'Kerkrade centrum' to Rolduc
takes about 20 min. (if you take the shortest route).
More information on how to get to Rolduc by private or public
transportation can be found at
